Launched in 2006 by The After-School Corporation (TASC), the Center's mission is to improve the quality of after-school programs in New York City and beyond by building a system of professional development supported by ongoing research and policy analysis. Message from Our Director

Greetings Colleagues:

The summer season is almost over as we quickly usher in the fall. From a professional perspective, one of the highlights of the summer included attending the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) 2007 Summer Institute in Miami, Florida. The three-day event brought together a diverse group of leaders from the fields of education, community development, government, philanthropy, youth development and others on the local, state, and national levels who are progressively involved in the afterschool movement.

An estimated 73 New Yorkers registered for the event. Those who attended garnered information from over 80 informative workshops and general sessions. Participants were formally introduced to the new 21st CCLC Group Leader with the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE), Sylvia Lyles, who without a doubt will forge ahead with great vision, commitment, tenacity and passion. The capsheaf for me was a plenary session keynote by Bonnie Reiss, the William S. White Award recipient.

The New York 21st CCLC Statewide Technical Assistance Center hosted an informal debrief conference call on August 14, 2007 to discuss how we could take the information obtained from the Summer Institute and use it in our work in New York. Peter Eldridge, Senior Program Officer at the USDOE, also participated on the call and the feedback was great. Mr. Eldridge was very open and receptive to comments and recommendations for next year's Institute. Though a location has not been secured, we can rest assured that it will be an event not to be missed.

As I sign off, the following is a thought I have been basking in and would like to share with you as we forge ahead in this afterschool movement.... "Persistence means conviction, enthusiasm, perseverance, and courage in the face of obstructions. Above all, it means never stopping, never giving up, and never giving in!"  Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Shalom,

  • Youth Risk Taking Behavior: The Role of Schools - Can schools really help reduceYouth Risk Taking youth risk-taking behavior? Teen pregnancy, substance abuse, dating violence, drunk driving are a few of the risky behaviors we associate with youth. These are also topics that are frequently discussed with students in schools. As a society, we have come to assume that young people will learn about the negative effects of these phenomena in the classroom, and as a result will ultimately avoid engaging in "risky behaviors." But both empirical and anecdotal evidence clearly show otherwise.

  • Core Principles for Engaging Young People in Community Change - Engaging young people as partners in communityEngaging Youth in Community Change change is a compelling idea, but translating that idea into effective practice requires focused attention to a of range issues. The principles described in this paper emerged from the commingling of research and practice that occurred when the Forum for Youth Investment merged with Community IMPACT! USA. They are important but simple principles for putting the idea of youth engagement into practice. They can be implemented in a wide range of organizations, including schools, youth organizations or community centers that want to strengthen their commitment to youth leadership, or community-change focused organizations or coalitions that want to strengthen their commitment to youth involvement.
