Excellence in Teaching: A Healthy Choice
Instructional Strategies for Higher Education

Dear Health Educator,

Elementary and secondary schools in New York State and throughout the nation are setting higher standards of learning for their students. To achieve the higher standards, students will need instruction from highly qualified teachers who can help their students learn to their highest levels of achievement.

Excellence in Teaching: A Healthy Choice has been developed to assist faculty in colleges and universities to prepare teacher candidates for teaching to the higher standards of learning. It was designed to support health educators at the post-secondary level assess and adjust their instructional programs and strategies to ensure that teacher candidates acquire the knowledge, skills and understandings needed for effective teaching in the new standards-based environment. It includes the New York State Learning Standards for Health Education as well as the National Health Education Standards.

The New York State Education Department and the New York State Federation of Professional Health Educators (NYSFPHE) extend appreciation to the consortium of eight institutions of higher education in New York State whose representatives devoted their time and professional expertise in the development of Excellence in Teaching: A Healthy Choice. Through their efforts, our future health education teachers will be well prepared to help their students engage in healthy behaviors that contribute to academic success.

Sincerely,
