Safety Concerns in Schools
The safety concerns that are faced by schools in the United States are unlike anything that anyone has ever had to deal with in this country before. It was only a few decades ago that students could expect to go to school, get an education and return home safely at the end of the day.
Today, that is no longer something that can be taken for granted.
Most adults do not know what it is like to go to school and be fearful about something catastrophic happening as a result of an individual’s actions. The children who go to school today are acutely aware of the dangers that are present, all because they are doing what every child in this nation has done for years. They are simply trying to get an education. They should not have to worry about someone spraying the classroom with bullets or planting bombs throughout the school, nor should they have to worry about attending school in buildings that are so old they are dangerous to the students who go there. Sadly, they do have to worry about all of these things, each and every day.
The face of the world is changing, and schools are no different. This is an unfortunate fact, but it is one that is driven home almost every time someone turns on the news. Sadly, it is also something that seems to be getting worse instead of better. It marks the significant change that is occurring throughout the United States in the world, one where people seem to value human life very little and think nothing of taking it in order to make a statement, even when it involves innocent children. The truth is, there are all kinds of concerns involving safety issues at school. These are not the only concerns that children have to deal with. There are concerns at every turn, and students must make hard choices that can sometimes impact the rest of their lives. They are often forced to choose about some of the most important decisions they will ever make long before they are prepared to do so.
What has to happen in order to fix the situation? This is an exceedingly difficult question to answer. If the answer were easy, it would have already been implemented in schools across the country. Higher security does not always equal better safety. Unfortunately, despite the increased levels of security that almost every school utilizes today, incidents still happen. As previously mentioned, sometimes it is the building itself that students need protection from more than anything else. The only thing that can really be done is to ensure that students have the safest possible environment to attend school in and that no stone has been left unturned when it comes to ensuring that possibility. Unfortunately, this is the reality of the situation. It is also a good place to start to ensure that students can once again be safer in the classroom in the future.
